You may have heard of one of the major issues with computers lately, Ransomware. It’s basically a nasty piece of software that encrypts and locks your files. It then demands a ransom be paid before unlocking your files. This ransom usually increases over time and your files are not always unlocked. Scary stuff! So how do you protect against it?
- Make sure your computer is updated. During the latest major Ransomware attacks, only computers running older operating systems were at risk. Make sure you keep your computer and all software up to date.
- Install and maintain an antivirus and antimalware software. They are not the same thing! It is best to have an antivirus program AND an antimalware program. Make sure they are kept up to date and are doing regular scans of your system.
- Keep a regular backup. There are a number of backup solutions available so make sure to pick the right one for you.
- If you get Ransomware don’t panic. Make sure your computer is not connected to a network (disconnect WiFi or unplug the Ethernet cable) and call us. If you have a backup of your data then the process will be extremely quick and simple.
